AKWASI
ABOUT
Akwasi is an established allrounder: he is rapper, actor, writer and presenter. At age 19 he founded
the rap formation Zwart Licht with producer Hayzee and rapper Leeroy. Together they released the
albums ‘Bliksemschicht’, ‘No JuJu’ and ‘Leeroy Draait Door’ with TopNotch. In 2014 Akwasi
started his own record label: Neerlands Dope (now NEED Recordings). Next to releasing his own
album ‘Daar Ergens’ here, he gave other young musical talent the opportunity to grow with their
music. While working with Zwart Licht, Akwasi was studying at the theatre academy in Maastricht.
After graduating here in 2012, he played roles in both television as well as theatre productions. He
followed an internship as performer at the South African music- and theatre collective ‘Afrikaaps’,
and played in ‘Hate’, the British version of the French film ‘La Haine’. Later on, he starred in
‘Feuten’, ‘Toren C’ and Halina van Reijn’s ‘Instinct’. Besides that, he presented NPO’s ‘De
Slavernij Voorbij’ and was one of the contestants of ‘Expeditie Robinson’ in 2019. Next to his
acting activities Akwasi released a poetry book called ‘Laten we het er maar niet over hebben’, he
toured the country as a spoken word artist and his voice can be heard in advertising campaigns from
HP, Heineken and Eneco. He shares his experiences as workshop master for writing skills, drama,
rap and stage presentation and is a jury member at the Grote Prijs van Nederland and the hip-hop
competition Wanted. Akwasi was a regular guest at ‘De Wereld Draait Door’ and as from 2021
Akwasi will be starring in Sam de Jong’s new feature film ‘MET MES’.
